Maryland Chapter Hike For Discovery 2008
The Maryland Chapter is Going to Yosemite

In 2007 I participated in the inaugural season of Hike for Discovery for the Maryland Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I personally raised nearly $5000 for cancer research and traveled to Grand Canyon National Park where I hiked into the canyon with the team I spent months training with. I was really inspired by the stories I heard and the people I met so when I was asked in 2008 to be Hike Leader for the 2008 season I jumped at the chance.

This year the Maryland Chapter has another great team training hard for a weekend in Yosemite National Park. As a team we will raise over $100,000 dollars to fight blood cancers. I couldn’t do it without the support of last year’s hike leader, Patti, four fantastic mentors who are all alumni from the 2007 Maryland team, and Julie our LLS Campaign Manager.

Hike for Discovery Boot Logo  About Yosemite National Park

Each year over 3.5 million people visit Yosemite National Park. Located about 150 miles east of San Francisco in the central Sierra Nevada of California, it's 750,000 acres is home to granite cliffs, waterfalls, giant sequoia groves, 800 mile of hiking trails, and the famous Half Dome.

Yosemite became the first natural area ever set aside for protection when Abraham Lincoln signed a bill on June 30, 1864 making it an inalienable public trust. This act was a first step to setting up the National Park System and on October 1, 1890, with the help of John Muir, Yosemite became the second National Park.

When setting out on a hike in Yosemite you can expect breathtaking views whether you plan on climbing thousands of feet to the top of Half Dome or just taking a leisurely walk in Yosemite Valley.
